Here’s the thing. Our world is in a mess. You only need to turn on the tv to understand why. It’s bad news after bad news. From global warming to man’s inhumanity towards each other, the future looks bleak. You can look at the news and resign yourself to the fact that there is nothing you can do about it. But here’s another thing. As a business owner, you can make a difference. If you have any moral values at all, and if you have any care for the world around us, you can create a change by what you do.

Okay, so you’re not Superman or Wonder Woman. You’re not a world leader, with the ability to make world-changing decisions. You’re not working in a science lab trying to cure world diseases through genetic research and DNA extraction. You’re not going to invent a time machine to right wrongs that have been committed thus far. And you’re not a miracle worker. But from your corner of the business world, there are things you can do.

You can be ethical within your business decisions

You can put a recycling policy in place. You can make an effort to run your business sustainably. You can run a paperless office. And you can educate your staff and customers on the greener practices you have put in place. One person can make a difference to the environment, but you have the capacity to be an example to many people, be that the public or the other businesses around you, and hopefully, they will follow suit after seeing your excellent example.

You can share your profits

There are all kinds of ways to invest your profits. You just need to follow our link for some examples. But rather than think of yourself and the overriding needs of your business, you might also consider being a little more philanthropic with your approach. Instead of serving your needs, why not invest some of your profits to support the needs of others? You might donate directly to a charity, and raise awareness about them in your regular promotional materials. Or you might use some of your money to put on a fundraising event on behalf of a good cause. This will give your business good publicity, but it will also publicise and serve the greater needs that such a cause can represent.

You can be a good person

Ever seen the movie Pay It Forward? Asked by his teacher to think of an idea that could change the world, one pupil comes up with the idea of doing favours for others, and they would in turn extend a favour to another, and so it goes and so it goes until everybody is doing good things for each other. It’s not an entirely new concept, but you could use it within your business. You don’t have to follow the concept literally, although you could if you wanted to give it a try. Rather, we are actually suggesting you do so realistically by being a good person, and by going the extra mile to be kind and helpful to your staff and customers. Your good behaviour may inspire them to go on and do the same. Heck, even a smile can make someone’s day; they may smile at another, and that person will smile at somebody else, and pretty soon, the whole world will be smiling with you. Maybe. You can’t achieve world peace, but one small act can go some way towards achieving it.

Real change won’t happen overnight, but you can take steps from your corner of the world to make some kind of a difference. Be that through actionable steps, such as supporting a charity with your business, or by simply being a person of integrity, you can create a positive impact today.
